Our first vet visit in Prague,

obstacles included!

Not only hubby and I moved to Prague last year, we also took our “middle aged” cat with us.

Shortly after we arrived, the “annoying furball”, as he is affectionately called, developed some skin problems. It seemed to us that his skin itched, so he bit and washed it until his fur became thin in some patches, especially on his back. My first thought was about re-settlement stress and then the change of diet. In England, he would supplement his diet regularly with field mice, baby rabbits and birds. Here kitty has become a flat cat, relying entirely on what we, his human slaves, give him. This is to my secret relief, as stepping on half a mouse on the carpet when getting up doesn’t actually count as one of my favourite ways to start the day.

So I started to look into feeding him as naturally as possible and from then on he has feasted happily on raw meat and raw chicken necks. His fur became shiny again, but his skin didn’t improve much. So today it was off to the vet. Getting him in the transport cage was quite a fight. This cat doesn’t like to travel, period! After having driven a few hundred meters, the windscreen wipers died and it was raining… To cut a long story short: We arrived at the vet, driving very, very slowly (how the Czech must have loved us for this) and didn’t have to wait long. The diagnosis was quickly found; some allergy caused by parasites ?mites? in the skin, which provoked the itch, which let to scratching, biting and skin infection. The “expensive furball” got treated with Stronghold, a kind of a super-potent version of Frontline and was send home. Since we are home he has not once bitten his fur, so there is hope that this will not evolve into a series of expensive vet visits. Especially, as the car needs to go into the garage to get the wipers repaired. In case that on of my readers looks for a vet in Prague that speaks English, knows what she does and doesn’t overcharge you, may we recommend MVDr. Hana Kovačičová at Veterinární ordinace Červený Vrch
